How far away should a monitor be placed?
A common guide is a viewing distance of about 50 to 70 cm; larger screens may require more distance. Screen height and font size should suit the person's eyes and visual ability.
The top line of the screen should sit at or slightly below eye level so the gaze is slightly downward. Screens placed too close force constant refocusing; screens too low bend the neck.
With two monitors: main screen straight ahead, second angled at the same radius to the side. Laptops need either an external monitor or a stand plus external keyboard; without either, a neutral posture is impossible.
Key points
- Viewing distance about 50–70 cm, more for large displays
- Top line at or slightly below eye level
- Laptop only with stand and external keyboard
