Workplaces & office types

What types of offices are there?

Common types are the private office, two-person and group offices, open-plan offices, combi-offices, open space and activity-based concepts – plus coworking, satellite offices and the home workstation.

Office types differ mainly in space per person, acoustics and how well interruptions can be controlled. Private offices support concentration at high space cost; open space supports exchange with more disturbance.

In hybrid organisations activity-based concepts are winning: zones for focus work, collaboration, calls and informal exchange instead of uniform desk rows.

Fit to the task matters: if people mainly take video calls in the office, they need booths and rooms rather than more desks.
