Why commute time is the most underrated recruiting argument

An average German full-time employee commutes 17 km one-way — roughly 70 minutes of life-time per day that is neither paid nor valued. Over a year that's more than 250 hours nobody gets back. Employers offering two extra home-office days per week give every team member several full weeks of life-time per year. That's not a benefit — that's a statement.

Methodology

CO₂ factors are based on TREMOD 2023 (UBA) and reflect the average German car fleet plus the public-transit mix of bus, tram, S-Bahn and regional rail. Car cost of €0.30/km follows the ADAC cost calculator for the compact class (fuel, wear, proportional depreciation). Particulate values include both exhaust and abrasion (tires, brakes). A tree absorbs around 22 kg CO₂ per year — we use a mid-aged beech as reference.

How AI insights work

After the calculation, our AI translates the raw numbers into communicable statements: a sharp headline, three ready-to-use LinkedIn/careers statements with concrete figures, an ESG sentence for your sustainability report and a human angle on the reclaimed life-time. A spreadsheet becomes a story that resonates with candidates, employees and stakeholders.

FAQ

How accurate are the CO₂ savings?

We use the official TREMOD 2023 factors from the German Environment Agency (UBA): 154 g CO₂/km for the average car, 58 g CO₂/km for public transit (bus, tram, S-Bahn, regional rail mix). Bike and walking are zero. This delivers realistic numbers fit for ESG reports and employer branding.

How is commute time calculated?

We use realistic door-to-door speeds: 30 km/h car (incl. traffic and parking), 25 km/h transit (incl. transfers and waiting), 12 km/h bike/walk. Multiplied by round-trip and 46 working weeks per year.

Why 46 working weeks?

52 weeks minus 6 weeks for holiday and sickness equals 46 productive working weeks per year – the standard for workforce planning.

What's included in the mobility cost?

Car: €0.30/km per ADAC cost calculator (fuel, wear, depreciation share). Transit: €0.12/km as a blend of monthly/annual passes and singles. Bike/walk: €0. This money flows straight out of your employees' pockets – a concrete recruiting argument.

What do the AI insights add?

The AI translates your numbers into ready-to-use statements for your careers page, LinkedIn posts, ESG reporting and internal comms. A spreadsheet becomes a story that moves candidates, employees and stakeholders – with concrete figures.

Is my input stored?

The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Only if you click 'Generate AI insights' the anonymized aggregate inputs (no names, no addresses) are sent to our AI backend. Nothing is stored, nothing is tracked.
