Ergonomics isn't a furniture problem – it's a constellation question

The best height-adjustable desk is useless if the monitor sits too low and your shoulders stay in protective tension all day. Ergonomics only works as a system: chair, desk, monitor, keyboard, mouse, light – plus the rhythm of life in between. This check delivers the numbers. The personalised tips help you set the right order.

What the measurements mean

Seat height
Knees at 90–100°, feet flat on the floor – otherwise discs and circulation suffer.
Desk height
Forearms horizontal, shoulders relaxed. 2–3 cm too high causes neck pain after 4 hours.
Monitor height
Top edge at or just below eye level – otherwise the head drops and the neck pays.

Why ergonomics is strategic for employers

Musculoskeletal complaints are, according to BAuA, the most common cause of sick leave in Germany – ahead of mental health issues. Each sick day costs a company around €400 (BKK estimate). A well-set-up home-office workstation measurably reduces this risk – and works as an employer-branding signal: "We take your health seriously, even at home."

Methodology

We use established anthropometric factors: popliteal height (seat) ≈ 24.7 % of body height, elbow height sitting ≈ 43 %, standing ≈ 62 %, eye level sitting (above floor) ≈ 68 %. Viewing distance follows arm-length and is clamped to 50–80 cm (DIN EN ISO 9241-303). Personalised recommendations are generated based on the entered values – without any personal identifiers.

FAQ

How accurate are the calculated measurements?

Values are based on BAuA recommendations, DIN EN 527 (office furniture) and DIN EN ISO 9241 (display screens). We use established anthropometric factors (popliteal height ≈ 24.7% of body height, elbow height sitting ≈ 43%, standing ≈ 62%). These are reference values – individual adjustments of ±2 cm are normal and sensible.

Why does the check ask about complaints?

Complaints like neck pain, mouse arm or eye strain have different root causes. Recommendations are weighted accordingly: eye strain prioritises the 20-20-20 rule and screen distance, while back pain shifts focus to chair depth and sit-stand switching.

How is the ergonomics score calculated?

The score (0–100) rates overall risk based on screen time, sit/stand behaviour, number of monitors and reported complaints. 85+ = excellent, 65–84 = solid, 45–64 = needs work, < 45 = clear risk. The score is an indicator, not a medical assessment.

Is my data stored?

All calculations run in your browser. Only when you click 'Get tips' your anonymous inputs (height, hours, complaints – no names or IDs) are sent to our backend. Nothing is stored or tracked.

Does this replace a formal risk assessment?

No – the ergonomics check is a personal tool for employees. The formal home-office risk assessment under §5 ArbSchG (Germany) can be created in 5 minutes with our separate tool 'Home-office risk assessment'.

Can I use the check for my whole team?

Yes – the formulas work for any body height between 140 and 210 cm. For teams, onyo additionally offers equipment packages (Basic / Advanced / Premium) tailored to each person's individual measurements.
