Why a structured home-office risk assessment?

Home office is not a legal vacuum. Employers must protect health and safety even when employees work from their kitchen table. A structured check turns a fuzzy legal duty into an actionable plan.

Stay legally safe

Meet § 5 ArbSchG, DGUV and works-council expectations with a documented assessment.

See real risks

Spot ergonomic, electrical, mental-load and data-protection issues before they escalate.

Concrete measures

Get a prioritized list of measures per topic — instead of a vague 'we should do something'.

Management-ready PDF

Export a clean one-page summary for leadership, HR and the works council.

How the assessment works

From open question to documented assessment in four steps.

  1. 01

    Answer the check

Short questions on workstation, ergonomics, screen work, electrical safety, mental load and privacy.

  2. 02

    Get a traffic-light score

Each topic is rated green / yellow / red so you immediately see where to act.

  3. 03

    Receive concrete measures

Per topic you get a list of recommended measures — from ergonomics to privacy.

  4. 04

    Export PDF & act

Brief leadership and works council with a clean PDF summary — and start implementing.

Home-office risk assessment: the duty most employers underestimate

Many employers assume that occupational safety stops at the office door. It doesn't. The German Occupational Safety Act (§ 5 ArbSchG) obliges employers to assess hazards for every workplace, regardless of where it is — including home office and mobile work. Insurance carriers, works councils and DGUV all reference this duty explicitly.

The challenge is practical: you cannot inspect every kitchen and living room. That is why a structured online check has become the de-facto standard. It documents that you took the duty seriously, identifies the typical risks (ergonomics, screens, electrical setup, mental load, privacy) and produces an actionable list of measures.

Which topics belong in the check

A serious home-office risk assessment covers at least: the workstation itself (desk, chair, monitor, lighting), ergonomics and posture, screen work and breaks, electrical safety of the equipment used, mental load and isolation, working-time documentation, and data protection / information security.

From check to measures

The output is only valuable if it leads to change. Typical follow-ups are: an ergonomic minimum standard (chair, desk, monitor, headset, light) that every home-office workplace must meet, a briefing for employees, a works-council agreement on mobile work, and a clear escalation path for issues. onyo helps you turn the result of this assessment into exactly that operating model — with equipment, compliance and reporting in one place.

Note: This tool is an orientation aid and does not replace an individual legal review of your specific operational context.

Frequently asked questions

Do employers really need a home-office risk assessment?+

Yes. Under German occupational safety law (§ 5 ArbSchG) employers must perform and document a risk assessment for every workplace — including home office and mobile work. This applies regardless of how many days per week someone works remotely.

Is the tool really free?+

Yes. You can run the home-office risk assessment directly here on onyo.de — no sign-up, no credit card. You get a traffic-light score and a PDF summary you can use internally.

How does the traffic-light score work?+

You answer short questions on topics such as workstation, ergonomics, screen work, electrical safety, mental load and data protection. The tool then computes a status per topic (green / yellow / red) and shows the most important missing measures with concrete recommendations.

Does this replace a full risk assessment?+

The tool is a solid orientation aid and a strong first step. A legally robust, organization-specific risk assessment also takes your concrete equipment, tasks and works-council involvement into account. onyo can support you in turning the result into a complete documentation.

What happens to the data I enter?+

Processing happens in your browser session. No personal employee data is required — you provide organization-level facts and typical workstation parameters. Processing happens in the EU and is set up to be GDPR-compliant.

What are the next steps after the check?+

From the result you can derive concrete measures: ergonomic standards for home-office equipment, briefings, templates for works-council agreements and reporting toward leadership. This is exactly where the onyo ecosystem comes in.
